A Village of Support

June Impact Story

When Carly and her family first welcomed Amara* into their home, she was just shy of her first birthday and not even walking or talking yet. Eight months later, she races through their living room giggling, singing, and playing with other kids, like she’s always been part of the family routine.

It All Started With a Hosting...

What began as a one-week hosting last July has grown into a lasting relationship with Amara and her mom, Star*. “We just love her so much,” Carly shares about Amara. “We enjoy her company, and it seems like she enjoys ours.” Amara's comfort in their home is evident. This was apparent when they recently picked up Amara from daycare, and she ran straight to Carly.

As a single mom navigating life, Star reached out to New Mercies Ministries for support during a challenging season. Through our Hosting Program, the Bickels offered a safe, loving space for Amara while Star focused on her goals. Now, their connection extends far beyond a short-term solution – it’s become a meaningful part of both families’ lives.

"It's been amazing to watch our boys care for her at church or when we're out," Carly reflects. "The way this experience has taught them to care for others is so neat." The boys have formed a special bond with Amara, calling her "baby Amara” and missing her when she leaves. Amara calls them “da boys.”

A New Village

But it’s not just Amara who’s found new friendships. Over time, Carly and Star have built a relationship that’s rooted in genuine friendship. They regularly share updates and photos, and Star refers to the Bickels as “fam.” “My hope is that this mom has found a trusted support system, “ Carly says, describing Star as strong and brave and willing to ask for support when she needs it.

This story is a glimpse into what happens when people come together across different circumstances and simply show up for one another. For the Bickels, hosting hasn’t just been about helping. It’s been about learning, growing, and saying yes to meaningful connection.

“We have our parents or our siblings, but we love that we can be her village,” Carly says. And that’s what New Mercies Ministries is all about: families walking alongside families so no one has to face life alone.
