Drawn to the Lord

Drawn to the Lord

Kathy was a brand-new mentor with our Rooted Together ministry when she met a mom we’ll call Daphne. She didn’t know much about her, only that Daphne had recently expressed interest in being mentored after her three sons were hosted.

But God was going before Kathy and Daphne, like He always does. And in His perfect timing, He connected these two women in a way only He could orchestrate.

Reaching Out

Daphne had grown up with confusion and trauma surrounding religion. She believed in God but wrestled with fear and doubt about who He really was. When her boys began attending church with their Host Family, something changed. Her youngest started walking around the house singing “Jesus Loves Me,” and it pricked her heart.

She told Kathy that she didn’t want her boys to grow up confused like she was. And in order to help them have clarity, she needed to find it herself.

Kathy began walking through a Bible study with Daphne, answering her questions and listening to her struggles. “There were times the study felt deep,” Kathy recalled, “so I’d pause and just go back to the simple truth of the Gospel.” She even shared the wordless book with her, where the colors help explain the story of Jesus.

Along the way, Kathy and Daphne discovered something sweet: all three of Daphne’s boys have names that start with “R”, just like Kathy’s four grandchildren. “God knows we need those little connections,” Kathy shared.

Seeking Truth

Daphne was hungry to learn. She asked honest questions. She shared her hesitations. Kathy encouraged Daphne to pray, letting her that God would listen. She wept before the Lord and asked God, “Help me not be so confused, so I can teach my kids about who you are.”

Each week, Daphne opened up more. She talked about how it was hard to see God’s provision in her life because of all the trauma she had been through. But now she was seeing it through her Family Coach, through Kathy, and through so many other little things. “This has just been weird,” she said once. “But in the midst of this mess, there’s been these things I can’t explain, other than God.”

Finding the Answer

Then, during one of their Tuesday meetings, Kathy asked, “What’s keeping you from accepting His free gift?” And Daphne prayed the prayer of salvation that day.

God was in Daphne’s life all along. Right when she was looking for answers, He called Kathy to be the one to walk alongside her. “I didn’t know this young lady,” Kathy reflected. “But He knew her.”

Daphne’s story is just beginning, but it’s a testimony already. A testimony of God’s provision. Of how He sends the right people at the right time. And of how He draws hearts to Himself, even in the middle of the mess.
