The Impact of Showing Up
When Bianca* reached out to New Mercies, she was facing more than she could manage alone. As a single parent navigating a complex season, she needed a safe place for her young son, Darius*, while recovering and regaining stability with a newborn. Host Family Kristin and Greg Yoder stepped up, supported by Family Coach Audrey. What started as a short-term hosting became a beautiful example of the Church being the Church for a family without community.
A Normal Hosting
The initial arrangement went smoothly. Darius adjusted well to his temporary routine, and the Yoders provided him with a loving place to stay. But as the hosting concluded and Bianca returned home with her son, the story didn’t end there.
Family Coach Audrey remained in close contact with Bianca, offering encouragement, prayer, and tangible support. Whether it was dropping off a meal or helping troubleshoot everyday challenges, she consistently reminded Bianca she was not alone.
Going Above and Beyond
One moment in particular stood out as an example of God’s provision through His people. When Bianca needed to take her son to a medical appointment in Indianapolis—three hours away—she wasn’t sure how she would get there or manage the logistics with her baby, Damon*, in tow. Kristin and Greg offered to drive her, making the trip with her and helping to carry the load.
While Audrey stayed back with baby Damon, Greg and Kristin walked with Bianca through what could have been an overwhelming day. It wasn’t part of their official role as a Host Family. It wasn’t something anyone expected. But it was a natural outflow of the relationship built: trust, care, and a shared understanding that the Church is called to be like family to those who feel alone.
Throughout their time together, Kristin gently encouraged Bianca to explore community, picking her up so she could visit their church and sharing online resources to stay connected. Audrey prayed with her often and reminded her of God’s nearness. Both women planted seeds of truth, trusting that the Lord would bring growth in His time.
Reflecting God's Heart
This story is a beautiful reminder that when we walk alongside vulnerable families with the hope of Christ, we do more than prevent a crisis. We reflect the heart of God, offering community where there was isolation and connection where there was loneliness.
Most volunteers can’t drive hours across the state to serve a parent. But each one has the opportunity to be a small part of the story, where love looks like showing up.
